Luke Pretorius is no ordinary Grade 10 learner. As both a dedicated learner at Teneo Online School and a rising star in competitive cycling, Luke has mastered the art of balance. With the flexibility and support offered by Teneo, South Africa’s leading online-only school, he can train, race, and succeed academically while pursuing his dream of becoming a professional cyclist.
Luke joined Teneo Online School in 2020, right in the middle of the pandemic. This pivotal choice allowed him to leave traditional schooling behind and benefit from an online format that perfectly suits his lifestyle. “I didn't really enjoy bricks and mortar, so obviously going online was the better decision for me. I like the flexibility,” he shares.
For Luke, this flexibility hasn’t just helped him better manage his time – it’s also improved his academic results. “If I miss a lesson, I can go back and watch the lesson, so it's very easy for me to catch up. I'm definitely doing better academically,” he says. The balance between academics and his cycling passion has been transformative.
His love for cycling started in 2017 with his previous school’s cycling team, but since joining Teneo, Luke has taken his dedication to new heights. With a rigorous training schedule of 10 hours on the bike each week, he’s committed to both his studies and sport. “Often, I have to do a training ride with the team, and it's really hard to miss out on it because if you miss a ride you fall back so much,” he says, explaining that Teneo’s recorded lessons mean he never misses a beat – in training or schoolwork.
Competitive cycling has taught Luke some valuable life skills that he applies in his studies. “Racing teaches you a lot about life; even if you get knocked down, you have to get back up,” he reflects. Now racing with the Drivetrain Academy, this determination has led Luke to incredible achievements, including winning the New Hanover Classic, a 45-kilometre race, and placing fourth in the Tour Durban MTB race. He’s also earned provincial colours for KwaZulu-Natal, showcasing his dedication and skill in the sport.
Looking to the future, Luke dreams of joining a professional cycling team overseas and racing internationally.
“I would definitely like to join a pro team overseas, go to the States, race there for a little, hopefully pick up a sponsor or two, and then go from there,” he says. For now, he’s focused on improving his skills and achieving his goal of winning the SA Marathon Champs.
The flexible schedule that Teneo offers is essential to Luke’s success. Unlike traditional schools, Teneo allows learners to plan their days around extracurricular commitments. “I typically do one to two hours [of cycling] every afternoon. On the weekends it goes to three or four hours,” he explains. With Teneo’s online classes and recorded lessons, Luke has the freedom to prioritise both his education and his passion for cycling without sacrificing either.
Despite his packed schedule, Luke has maintained strong academic performance. His favourite subjects are Physical Science and Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD). “Physical Science gives an explanation behind things, why a certain reaction does a certain thing, and then EGD is drawings… I really like drawing, and it gives me a bit of a way to express what's happening around me,” he says.
Luke also appreciates the support he receives from his teachers at Teneo. “They are really helpful,” he comments, adding that if he doesn’t understand something, they’re always available to answer questions.
Luke’s teachers are proud of his achievements, both on and off the bike. “Luke’s dedication to both his sport and his academics is commendable. He’s shown us how determination and time management can lead to success in multiple areas of life,” says Tracey Clayton, mathematics teacher and Grade Leader at Teneo.
“We’re so proud of how Luke has balanced his responsibilities as an athlete and a learner. His achievements are a perfect example of how online schooling can empower learners to thrive both academically and personally,” Clayton adds.
For learners considering online schooling, especially those juggling extracurricular commitments, Luke offers a bit of wisdom. “Sitting behind a laptop screen is very hard. It gets challenging at times,” he acknowledges. Taking breaks, getting some fresh air, and staying active are essential. Luke’s structured day includes morning classes, a midday break where he often makes lunch for his family, and afternoon training sessions.
Reflecting on his experience with Teneo, Luke is confident that online schooling has been the right choice for him. “I'm very grateful. It really has helped me a lot,” he says, explaining that Teneo has allowed him to gain momentum in cycling while keeping up with his academics, proving that flexibility in education can be a game-changer.
As Luke continues to chase his dreams, he remains focused on his goals in both cycling and academics. His journey is a testament to the power of flexible online schooling and how, with determination, commitment, and the right support, learners like him can excel both in and out of the classroom.
